Due to the Belfast Model School for Girls’ past designation as a Specialist School in ICT, the ICT Department has developed an impressive array of facilities including; 15 rooms housing a total of 268 Windows PCs, 3 suites housing a total of 55 Apple iMac computers, over 100 laptops based throughout the school and every classroom is equipped with a teacher computer and Promethean interactive whiteboard. Mono laser printers are available in every computer suite, with a number of additional colour laser printers throughout the school.
The Department offers ICT throughout Year 8 and 9 where pupils are encouraged to learn basic skills in topics such as Health and Safety, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint, Internet Safety, Microsoft Excel and Access, Desktop Publishing and Web Graphics. In Year 10, all pupils will progress to study OCR Nationals at Level 2. This GCSE equivalent qualification covers themes such as ICT in Business, Spreadsheets – Design and Use, Web Graphics, Multimedia, Desktop Publishing, Databases and Animation for the World Wide Web. Pupils can achieve up to grades A*A*AA at GCSE equivalent.
In Sixth Form there are two routes of study, Single and Double Award Applied A-Level. All pupils will cover the themes of ICT in Society, ICT & Organisations and Data Handling, whilst the Double Award pupils will cover a further three topics – Hardware & Software, Computer Artwork and Web Design.
In Year 14 pupils can continue their studies at A2 Double and Single Award level. All pupils will study Project Management, Advanced Spreadsheet Design and Interactive Multimedia Design, whilst the Double Award pupils will also cover Software Development, Communications & Networks and Supporting ICT Users. Throughout AS/A2 the focus is on the practical application of knowledge making this study pathway an excellent foundation for further/higher education or the world of work.
The ICT Department also offer Enrichment classes to Sixth Form pupils. The ECDL qualification allows those pupils who do not wish to pursue careers in ICT to develop transferable skills that will help their employability. Enrichment classes cover the topics of Concepts of ICT, Using the Computer & Managing Files and Webbrowsing & Communication.
Learners studying ICT A-Level have had a 100% pass rate for several years. Also, in three years out of the past five, we have had students in the top of the UK results. In 2008 we had three girls achieve grades within the top 10 of the UK, in 2010 Sarah-Jayne Pollock achieved the highest grade in the UK and in 2011, two of our girls achieved grades within the UK’s top 7.
