Media Studies is offered at Key Stage 4. The qualification is set in a vocational context for those wishing to pursue further study or a career in the field of Media. The Department can boast a fully equipped Media Suite with iMacs, media editing facilities and a recording studio.
In Year 11 pupils begin their AQA GCSE programme by learning about the language and concepts used in the Media. A study of the institutions, how the media is represented and the audience follows. In Year 11, pupils produce two pieces of controlled assignment work on the theme of Advertising and Film which is worth 30% of their final mark in total.
In Year 12, learning is in preparation for the third piece of controlled assignment work (30%) and the 1 ½ hour exam on Television Crime Drama, worth the remaining 40% of their mark.
CCEA Occupational Studies in Media is also offered at Key Stage 4. This is a link-course with the Business Studies Department. Media pupils will complete one unit of coursework on Digital Film and TV in Year 11 and one unit of coursework on Radio Production in Year 12. The remaining two units of this qualification are from the Office Admin programme taught by the Business Studies Department.
