Travel and Tourism is a vocational subject offered at Key Stage 4 and Post-16. It offers a practical, hands-on approach suitable for pupils who wish to progress to further and higher education or into employment within the Travel and Tourism industry.
At Key Stage 4 we offer the BTEC Level 2 First Certificate which is a two-year course. This qualification has the same grade equivalency as traditional GCSEs. Pupils study three units across two years:
- The UK Travel and Tourism Sector
- Understanding Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
- Understanding the Nature and Effects of World Travel
The BTEC qualifications are written to industry standards and the Level 2 Firsts provide good foundation for further study in Sixth Form.
In Sixth Form we offer BTEC Level 3 Nationals. Year 13 pupils will study for their BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma which is equivalent to 1 A-Level and in Year 14 they can opt to continue their studies to achieve a BTEC National Diploma, equivalent to a second A-Level.
Units studied within these qualifications are:
- Investigating the Travel and Tourism Sector
- The Business of Travel and Tourism
- TheUKas a Destination
- Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
- Marketing Travel and Tourism Products and Services
- Preparing for Employment in Travel and Tourism
- European Destinations
- Long-Haul Travel Destinations
- Responsible Tourism
- Events, Conferences and Exhibitions
- Cruise Operations
- Work Experience in the Travel and Tourism Sector
- Residential Study Visit in Travel and Tourism
All BTEC qualifications are portfolio-based and assignments are set within realistic industry scenarios.
Many of our pupils progress into further education, specialising in areas such as Aviation Operations. Other progress to higher education, studying for degrees in International Tourism Management, for example. Employment after Sixth Form is an increasingly popular option and past pupils currently work for well-known businesses such as Thomas Cook, Thompson, Emirates, Flybe, Easyjet and Servis Air.
