On Wednesday 21st February, Lucy Moran and Rowan Ross [Year 12], travelled to Stormont Parliament buildings to compete in the UUP’s Edgar Graham Memorial Cup Public Speaking Competition.
The competition was opened by the present UUP party leader, Doug Beattie, who praised the confidence and enthusiasm of the 25 students competing.
Also present to chair the event were Lady Trimble, and former UUP MP Sylvia Hermon. Former UUP MLA, Dermot Nesbitt, closed the competition honouring the memory of his friend, Edgar Graham, who was a rising political star and academic at Queen’s University before his assassination. Mr Nesbitt felt he saw all students exhibit the qualities Edgar possessed during the competition.
Our girls were again up against grammar schools from across the country, with years of experience at this competition. The topics on the night were of an exceptionally high standard, but our girls held their own with their own topics: “The hottest place in hell is reserved for those who remain silent” and “Democracy needs to die.”
For our first ever entry, our girls received commendations from the judge, and brilliant feedback to take on board for our entry again next year. They were praised for their originality and connection with the audience.
They also enjoyed meeting other entrants from other schools, including seeing some of their fellow competitors at the Business and Professional Women’s Public Speaking Competition. Even when competing, our girls are always gracious and happy to make friends in great sporting spirit.
