It was all about Live Theatre in the central hall on Tuesday 14th September 2021.

We were delighted to welcome cast and crew of Belfast’s famous theatre company – Bruiser.

Bruiser is one of Belfast’s leading professional theatre companies, specialising in high-quality physical theatre productions. Their energetic ethos translates directly into their ambition to produce impactful dramatic productions which excite and stimulate audiences.

We were treated to a fast paced, hilarious and at times heart breaking performance of Mojo Mickybo, written by Owen McCafferty, and directed by Lisa May.

Mojo Mickybo – The story of two young boys growing up in Belfast in the 1970’s. Great pals – for the most part, unaffected by their different religions and culture, while the violence of The Troubles plays out in the background.

Until, that is, the Troubles won’t stay in the background anymore and an innocent childhood bond is destroyed forever.

“The reason the play is seen through the eyes of children is that I wanted to show the absurdity of sectarianism. And I thought the best way to do that was through the innocence of children.”

– Owen McCafferty

It was hard to believe at times that only two actors made up the cast, as they skilfully bounced from character to character, male to female, young to old – a real taste of 1970’s Belfast.

The audience was made up of GCSE and A-Level Drama and Performing Arts students – not forgetting all of our Year 10 students!

A great opportunity, a great play and of course…a great audience.

After the performance, Miss Reynolds and her Year 11 Drama class, took part in a workshop lead by Rob Crawford (Bruiser Actor and Facilitator.)

The students used Physical Theatre and a range of Bruiser techniques to highlight moments from the earlier performance.

Thanks to all who attended.

Ms Simpson
