The Home Economics department also offers Enrichment classes in Survival Cookery for Sixth Form pupils. This is a class which highlights the skills needed to survive in the kitchen as a student or to cook for pleasure at home.In Sixth Form pupils can continue to develop their vocational knowledge by studying GCE Health and Social Care (CEA). In Year 13 pupils complete their AS qualification, comprising two portfolio assessments (Promoting Positive Care and Communication in Care Settings), and one external exam focusing on Health Promotion Strategies. In Year 14 pupils can progress to A2 level where they complete two external exams on Providing Services and Human Psychology and one portfolio on Health Promotion.
In Year 11 and 12 pupils can opt to follow different pathways offered by the Department. Occupational Studies in Hospitality (CEA) focuses on the vocational use of the skills developed at Key Stage 3. This Level 1 and 2 qualification covers Food Preparation and Cooking (Kitchen and Larder and Patisserie). A more traditional academic route offered by the Department is GCSE Child Development (CEA). This qualification comprises two exams covering the topics of Child Birth & Pregnancy and Child Development. The remainder of the assessment for this course is two pieces of controlled coursework, one being an investigative task and the other a short task.Home Economics is taught to all pupils throughout Key Stage 3 where topics such as Healthy Eating, Home and Family Life and Independent Living are covered. Pupils learn a range of skills including making healthy food choices and budgeting to creatively using food to develop the skills to help them cope with the roles and responsibilities involved in modern family life. The Home Economics Department of the Belfast Model School for Girls is located within a suite of purpose-built, spacious rooms. Each of the three rooms has state-of-the-art facilities to enable the practical teaching of food preparation.
