Students from the STEM club entered the Royal Academy of Engineering Sustainable Futures competition. Their proposal was to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas partly responsible for causing global warming) in the air by reacting it with sodium hydroxide, producing a carbonate and then storing this in the old salt mines at Carrickfergus. The air (now lower in carbon dioxide) is returned to the atmosphere. They built a working model to demonstrate their idea and made a short video that was sent to the Royal Academy of Engineering in London. 660 schools from across the UK entered the competition and our school was placed in the final 20. They won for the school a 3D printer and robots for themselves.
Well done and looking forward to hearing about your idea for the next competition.
