We have been made aware of the anonymous chat application called ‘SimSimi’ that has recently made the headlines because of its link to cyberbullying.  The app, which has been banned inImage result for simsimi the Republic of Ireland, looks harmless but can be used anonymously to cyberbully.  It also allows users to type in people’s names and receive an anonymous, sometimes insulting and nasty message back.

We have spoken to our students in assembly and form class and we have advised them to remove this app from their device if they have previously downloaded it.  We would also appeal to parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online behaviour to help prevent cyberbullying.

“The most concerning feature about this app is that it would be possible to enter a question about a student using their name, class or even school and have a rude, insulting or inappropriate message generated about them once the question is asked within the app.  This could be then screen shot shared, and posted throughout social media platforms causing further hurt and distress.” – Wayne Denner blogpost

“The popularity of the app comes at a time of rising concern over the impact of cyberbullying on young people.  Some 14 per cent of primary school children and 10 per cent secondary school children have been cyberbullied, according to research conducted by Dublin City University’s national anti-bullying research and resource centre.  The centre has advised parents to familiarise themselves with apps and social media spaces used by their children to help prevent and intervene on cyberbullying.” – Irish Times article
