Last week the Year 11 Art and Design GCSE students attended the Ulster Museum on Friday 9th November 2018. This was an excellent opportunity to further develop their portfolio of work and see the importance and value of Art in the community.

The students visited the 137th Royal Ulster Academy annual exhibition in the Ulster Museum which showcases original works across the disciplines of the visual arts by emerging and established artists. They were able to photograph, take notes and draw sketches of artwork that link into their different themes of work.

The students braved the cold weather to go around Botanic Gardens photographing and drawing the various trees and plants. From one extreme to the other the students braved the heat inside the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. Here they could get up close to the amazing exotic flowers and plants. They were able to capture some stunning photographs from vast range of colourful flowers and draw the exotic plants from first hand.

Back inside the Ulster Museum, the students took the opportunity to draw from first-hand, sketching many two dimensional and three dimensional pieces of work in the ceramic area and throughout the museum and galleries. The students even got the chance to do a range of sketches and close up photography of ‘Dippy’ which is the Natural History Museum’s iconic Diplodocus dinosaur skeleton on tour in Belfast.

They also managed to fit in seeing the ‘Making Her Mark’ exhibition which is women print artists from the Ulster Museum collection. The students were to see first-hand the impact that women had in the history of printmaking.

The students found the trip extremely rewarding, feeling very inspired and gaining lots of ideas for their own portfolio of work.
