Here, at Belfast Model School for Girls, we have a team dedicated to the cross-curricular development of Literacy.

Through continuous professional development, we aim to design and introduce new strategies that will enable students to enhance their literacy skills, which will benefit their learning across the curriculum.

At present, we are working alongside organisations such as; Magenta, Accelerated Reader, Lexonik Leap, PiXL and Literacy Planet – to ensure that students are provided with a range of fantastic resources to enable them to progress.

We also have a number of fantastic clubs that students can attend, should they wish to further develop their literacy skills, outside of normal class time. Clubs such as; Book Club, Creative Writing Club, Debating Society, Wednesday Workshops and Jigsaw.

Learning Mentors

Our Learning Mentors are positive role models who promote learning and are regarded as earning champions within The Belfast Model School for Girls.

Many of the team hold Peer Mentoring qualifications through their work with Streetbeat and are proving their aptitude for mentoring through their work with KS3 students.

The Learning Mentors embrace their own experiences as a learner and share them with our Year 8 and Year 9 students, helping our younger students learn, developing their confidence and promoting learning opportunities within class, within our extracurricular programme and beyond the Belfast Model School for Girls.

We are proud of their leadership and the contribution they make to school life.

Paired Reading Training

Very many thanks to Shirley McAuley from @Ed_Authority for training our Learning Mentors in how to lead the Paired Reading Programme. This initiative will further progress the fantastic work our Learning Mentors have been doing to support KS3 students with their reading during dedicated Literacy Library periods.

We are grateful to our Learning Mentors for giving back to the Belfast Model School for Girls in such a productive way that has benefits for the whole school.
